Design education is increasingly challenged to move beyond prescriptive, outcome-driven approaches toward pedagogical models that emphasize exploration, collaboration, and conceptual reasoning. In foundational design courses, composition is often taught as a set of formal rules, limiting students’ ability to connect visual structure with meaning-making.

The framework centers on a modular, low-tech instructional system using semi-transparent paper layers printed with basic visual elements derived from foundational design principles, including point, line, shape, and negative space. Working in small groups, students physically layer, shift, and reconfigure these elements to produce abstract compositions.

These student-generated concepts are then introduced into a shared, fixed AI prompt designed to produce short, abstract conceptual prompts rather than visual outputs or narratives. … This approach reinforces the relationship between form, meaning, and design intent while positioning artificial intelligence as a critical thinking catalyst rather than a generative authority.
